African leaders met in Ghana on Sunday for the 6th African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting to tackle issues hampering continental integration and unite for major global discussions.
Mauritanian President Mohamed Cheikh Ghazouani, AU Chair, highlighted the urgency of speeding up economic integration to strengthen the continent and fulfill citizens’ expectations.
The meeting centered on securing funding for AU projects, given the organization’s significant dependence on external aid.
AU Commission Chair Moussa Faki Mahamat stressed the need for a unified African voice at international forums like the G20.
Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, AU Champion on Financial Institutions, urged consolidating development funding instruments to enhance resource allocation and create a unified financial framework.
Despite these efforts, challenges remain.
Mahamat noted the underperformance of Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and their diminished effectiveness.
The meeting also addressed regional instability in West Africa, affecting Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.
