Biya returns to Cameroon after weeks abroad

Cameroon’s President Paul Biya returned to Yaounde on Monday after weeks abroad, state media reported.

The 91-year-old leader appeared at the capital’s airport, accompanied by his wife Chantal Biya.

He was greeted by officials and a cheering crowd.

State-run Cameroon Radio Television (CRTV) broadcasted the scene, dismissing rumors about his health.

“This is not a phantom. It is President Paul Biya,” a presenter said.

Speculation about Biya’s health grew after his last public appearance at the China-Africa summit.

His absence from key international events, including the UN General Assembly, fueled concerns.

Biya is known for frequent trips to Europe, but details of his health remain private.

He has ruled Cameroon since 1982, making him Africa’s second-longest-serving leader.

His government faces multiple challenges, including a secessionist movement in English-speaking regions and violence from Boko Haram extremists in the north.
