A suspected Boko Haram member has surrendered to government forces in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno State, handing over a rocket-propelled grenade launcher and other equipment, the military said.
The fighter surrendered on Wednesday to troops serving under Operation Hadin Kai in the Pulka area, according to Nigerian military officials. He was carrying an RPG launcher, a rocket-propelled grenade and a mobile phone.
Captain Mohammed Goni, a military spokesperson, said preliminary information indicated that the man had previously operated around the Mandara Mountains, a rugged border region between Nigeria and Cameroon long associated with armed groups.
The suspect is undergoing preliminary questioning, identification checks and further assessment under established military procedures.
Military cites sustained pressure
The Nigerian military described the surrender as evidence that continuing operations were placing armed groups under increasing pressure and restricting their ability to move freely across the northeast.
Officials said Operation Hadin Kai would continue targeting militant networks while encouraging fighters who remain active to lay down their weapons.
The operation’s command also pledged to maintain pressure on Boko Haram and affiliated groups, limit their movements and help create conditions for lasting peace and stability in northeastern Nigeria.
Nigerian forces have battled Boko Haram and its offshoots for years across the northeast, particularly in areas near the country’s border with Cameroon.
