Botswana’s ruling party has suffered a stunning defeat in the country’s elections.
The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), which has held power since independence in 1966, won only four seats by Friday morning.
The Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) will now lead the diamond-rich nation.
President Mokgweetsi Masisi conceded to UDC leader Duma Boko in a congratulatory phone call.
Masisi acknowledged recent poor economic performance and high unemployment had hurt the BDP’s popularity.
“We got it wrong big time,” he admitted during a press conference.
Masisi announced he would step aside and support a smooth transition, encouraging supporters to rally behind the new government.
He assured Boko of his guidance and commitment to a peaceful handover. Boko praised the result as a major democratic milestone, calling it a “higher level” of democracy for Botswana.
Supporters of the UDC celebrated in the capital, Gaborone, with citizens welcoming the change.
Mpho Mogorosi, a 23-year-old student, expressed her excitement at witnessing a new era for Botswana.
The UDC has won a majority of 31 seats and aims to create jobs and address economic issues in the country.
