British soldier faces arrest in Kenya amid rape allegation claims

A British soldier has been arrested in Kenya, with UK military police now investigating the matter, the Ministry of Defense confirmed Sunday.

British media, including the BBC, reported the arrest is tied to a rape accusation.

The Defense Ministry stated it could not comment further due to an ongoing investigation by the Defence Serious Crime Command.

Thousands of British soldiers train annually in Kenya under a defense cooperation agreement, with around 200 permanently based there.

Local Kenyans have long expressed concerns about soldier behavior and the atmosphere near the Nanyuki training camp.

The arrest brings renewed focus after the 2012 death of Agnes Wanjiru, whose body was found in a septic tank after she was last seen with British troops.

Her family has tirelessly campaigned for justice, and in April, UK Defense Secretary John Healey met with them, promising to help them achieve deserved justice.

The British Army has also launched an inquiry into allegations of unacceptable behavior by UK personnel in Kenya.

The Ministry of Defense emphasized a “zero tolerance” policy for misconduct, stating all personnel receive mandatory training and briefings on conduct.
