Burundi urges action to prevent DR Congo war from spreading

The conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) risks spiralling into a wider regional war, with Burundi’s president warning of a “widespread” conflict.

The M23 rebel group, backed by Rwanda, has vowed to march on Kinshasa after capturing Goma, the region’s largest city.

Burundi, which has troops deployed in eastern DRC, has accused Rwandan forces of actively engaging in fighting against the M23.

The fighting has sparked a humanitarian crisis, with the UN reporting hundreds killed and thousands wounded.

The African Union has warned of a “full-scale public health emergency”, with fears of disease outbreaks.

Diplomatic efforts are underway to de-escalate the situation, but the involvement of multiple regional actors complicates the crisis.
