Burundi’s leader emphasizes regional unity for DR Congo stability

Burundi’s President, Evariste Ndayishimiye, called for coordinated efforts in sub-Saharan Africa to restore peace in the conflict-ridden Democratic Republic of Congo, highlighting the need for regional collaboration.

Ndayishimiye expressed concern over the resurgence of M23 rebels in eastern DR Congo during an address to Zambia’s parliament.

He is currently on a three-day visit to Zambia at the invitation of President Hakainde Hichilema.

Burundi, geographically part of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), shares borders with Tanzania and DR Congo on either side of Lake Tanganyika, underscoring its strategic regional importance.

Ndayishimiye emphasized Burundi’s eagerness to join SADC to contribute to regional peace and tackle issues such as terrorism, arms trafficking, and rising refugee numbers, appreciating Burundi’s collaboration with Zambia for DR Congo’s stability.

During his visit, he announced a donation of 5,000 tons of rice, beans, and maize to Zambia, a country currently experiencing drought, demonstrating Burundi’s commitment to regional solidarity and support.
