Bus carrying mourners overturns in western Kenya killing 25

At least 25 people were killed Friday in western Kenya when a 51-seater bus transporting mourners lost control and overturned, according to police officials.

This horrific event, described as one of the deadliest accidents of 2025, occurred at a notoriously dangerous blackspot in Kisumu County.

The Nyanza Regional Traffic Commander, Peter Maina, confirmed to reporters that all the victims were tragically returning from a funeral in the region.

Kenya has seen a troubling rise in fatal road accidents this year, with police officials consistently blaming a variety of factors for the increase.

Officials are particularly attributing many of these tragedies to speeding, reckless driving, and the poor maintenance of vehicles on the roads.

The fatal bus crash occurred just one day after a separate twin tragedy unfolded within Kenya’s vital transportation sector.

A light aircraft crashed into residential buildings in central Kenya, a tragic event which unfortunately resulted in the deaths of six individuals.

This incident came just hours after a train in Naivasha rammed into a staff bus, a fatal collision that killed eight Kenya Pipeline Company workers.
