Cash claims: Zambia rocked by minister’s exit

Zambia’s foreign minister, Stanley Kakubo, abruptly resigned on Tuesday, embroiled in a high-profile financial scandal that has cast a shadow over President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration.

State House spokesman Clayson Hamasaka confirmed Kakubo’s departure, stating that the president had accepted his resignation with immediate effect. While acknowledging Kakubo’s service and leadership, Hamasaka offered no specific reason for the sudden exit.

However, speculation swirled earlier in the day after a local tabloid alleged Kakubo’s involvement in a dubious mine financial transaction with Chinese nationals. The report accused him of accepting $200,000 and a luxury Mercedes-Benz in exchange for unspecified favors. Hichilema reportedly summoned Kakubo to address the accusations before the minister tendered his resignation.

This incident marks the second time Kakubo has faced financial misconduct allegations. In April 2022, he was captured on camera leaving a Chinese firm carrying a bag suspected to contain cash. The minister later clarified that the bag held only a new year’s calendar and diary, but the optics fueled public mistrust.

Following Kakubo’s resignation, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) announced its intention to investigate the alleged mine transaction. Spokesman Timothy Moono assured the public that the commission would conduct a thorough and transparent probe.

In a Facebook post, Kakubo defended his decision to step down, attributing it to his desire to shield the government from “malicious” claims and distractions. He reiterated his loyalty to Hichilema and pledged to continue serving his constituents as a Member of Parliament. He also expressed gratitude to the president, Cabinet colleagues, and ministry staff for their support during his tenure as foreign minister.

Kakubo’s resignation comes at a delicate time for Hichilema, who was elected in 2021 on promises of transparency and good governance. The scandal threatens to erode public trust in the new administration and could complicate its efforts to tackle Zambia’s economic challenges. The ACC’s investigation will be closely watched as it seeks to clarify the truth behind the allegations and ensure accountability if wrongdoing is found.

The Zambian political landscape remains volatile, and Kakubo’s resignation is likely to fuel further speculation and intrigue. With the 2026 elections on the horizon, Hichilema and his party face the crucial task of restoring public confidence and upholding their commitment to clean governance.
