Chad floods displace 1.7M, destroy thousands of homes

Severe flooding in Chad since July has resulted in the deaths of 503 people, the United Nations reported on Saturday.

The flooding has also impacted approximately 1.7 million people, causing widespread destruction across the country.

According to the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Chad, 212,111 homes have been destroyed.

In addition, 357,832 hectares of agricultural land have been flooded, causing significant damage to crops.

The disaster has also affected livestock, with 69,659 heads of cattle reported drowned in the flooding.

The UN and local authorities are working together to provide emergency relief and assess further needs.

Humanitarian efforts are ongoing as the affected population continues to struggle with displacement and loss of livelihoods.

The floods have created a critical need for food, shelter, and medical assistance in the hardest-hit areas.
