Chad president heads to Moscow for talks with Putin

Chad’s transitional President, General Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, has embarked on an official visit to Russia at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, as announced by both states.

The Kremlin confirmed a scheduled meeting between the two leaders on Wednesday, where discussions will cover the development of Russian-Chadian relations across various sectors, as well as current regional and international issues.

Chad, with a remaining French military presence, has become France’s key partner in the Sahel region since the withdrawal of French troops from Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.

The visit comes amidst Russia’s growing influence in neighboring countries like the Central African Republic, Libya, and Sudan, where private Wagner mercenaries are notably present.

General Mahamat Deby assumed leadership two years ago after the death of his father, Idriss Deby Itno. Chad’s army is recognized for its significant role in the anti-jihadist efforts in the region.

The transitional regime, led by General Mahamat, has committed to holding presidential elections by the year’s end, following international encouragement to adhere to the initial 18-month election pledge.
