Chad’s ruling Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS) won 124 of 188 seats in the country’s parliamentary elections, according to provisional results announced Sunday.
Held on December 29, the election marked Chad’s first parliamentary vote in over a decade, with a 51.5% voter turnout.
Several opposition parties, including Succes Masra’s Transformers party, boycotted the elections, citing concerns over fairness and transparency.
President Mahamat Idriss Déby, who took power in 2021 and was elected in May 2024, described the vote as a step towards decentralizing governance. T
he absence of key opposition groups allowed the MPS to dominate key regions.
Despite the electoral victory, Chad faces ongoing challenges, including threats from extremist groups and economic pressures from regional instability.
