China congratulates new Senegalese president

China extended its congratulations to Bassirou Diomaye Faye on Wednesday, following his victory in Senegal’s recent presidential election.

This marks a historic moment for the West African nation, with Faye becoming the youngest president in Senegal’s history.

“China views its relationship with Senegal as one between good friends and brothers,” stated Lin Jian, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Lin emphasized China’s commitment to strengthening ties with the newly elected government.

He outlined China’s desire to “deepen political mutual trust, expand practical cooperation, and promote the continuous development of bilateral relations.”

Senegal’s peaceful election on Sunday saw a record turnout of eligible voters, estimated at around 7.3 million.

The outcome defied historical trends, with Faye securing victory in the first round. His main rival, Amadou Ba, representing the outgoing government, conceded defeat after early results pointed towards a decisive Faye win.

China further commended the smooth and orderly nature of the Senegalese election. Lin expressed China’s satisfaction with the democratic process, highlighting its peaceful and well-organized execution.
