A deadly attack on a gold mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s northeastern Ituri province has left one Chinese national dead and another injured, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.
Colonel Jean-Baptiste Matadi Muyapandi, the region’s administrator, told AFP that unidentified gunmen raided the mine located in Mambasa territory on Monday evening.
“One Chinese national was killed, and another sustained injuries during the attack,” Muyapandi said.
A local policeman was also targeted by the assailants, who stole “money and a small quantity of gold” before fleeing the scene.
The Ituri province has long been troubled by violence from various armed groups vying for control of the region’s rich mineral resources.
Attacks on mining sites and convoys transporting minerals are frequent occurrences, raising concerns about the safety and security of workers in the industry.
