Cinema shines bright as Marrakesh festival opens under Israel’s Gaza war

The Marrakech International Film Festival emphasized the role of cinema in elevating artistic expression amid Israel’s war with Hamas and a recent earthquake in Morocco.

Despite uncertainties, festival president Jessica Chastain highlighted art’s historical use for communication and positive change.

The festival aims to showcase films from Morocco, the Middle East, and Africa, honoring director Faouzi Bensaidi.

The opening featured Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man,” and actor Mads Mikkelsen received a career achievement award.

The festival, following a recent earthquake, is seen as a “bastion of peace” according to Moroccan Prince Moulay Rachid.

It runs through Dec. 2 amid protests over the Gaza war in North Africa and the Middle East.
