Comoros President Azali Assoumani appointed his son, Nour El Fath, to coordinate government affairs amid a cabinet reshuffle.
This move followed a contentious January election, which opponents claimed was marred by voter fraud.
Violent protests erupted in Comoros, a group of islands off Mozambique’s coast, after the election body declared Assoumani re-elected.
One person died and at least 25 were injured in the unrest.
Political analysts and opposition leaders suggest Assoumani is grooming El Fath, a 40-year-old finance expert and senior economic adviser since 2019, to succeed him.
Local media also support this view.
On Monday, Assoumani announced his new cabinet.
Ibrahim Mohamed Abdou Razakou became finance minister, Said Omar Houmadi justice minister, and Youssoufa Mohamed Ali was reappointed as defence minister.
Mohamed Jaffar Abbas, head of the opposition coalition, accused Assoumani of “trying to build a dynasty.”
He noted that Assoumani’s nephew previously held El Fath’s position as government secretary-general.
