A landslide triggered by heavy rain killed at least nine people, including seven children from one family, in Kabulu village, South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo, late Friday.
The victims included a man’s wife and seven children, according to local administrator Thomas Bakenga. One more child died elsewhere. The death toll could rise as rescue efforts continue.
A civil society group reported seven homes destroyed and 31 damaged. Experts link rising extreme rainfall in Congo to climate change, exacerbating vulnerabilities caused by poor urban planning. Similar disasters have claimed dozens of lives in recent years.
