Delphin Katembo, a Congolese rapper known as Idengo, has been released from imprisonment following a presidential pardon after being arrested in 2021 for criticizing President Felix Tshisekedi, as confirmed by the musician in a statement to media on Tuesday.
Katembo faced charges of insulting the nation’s leader and allegedly inciting violence against security forces after his arrest in October 2021.
His imprisonment stemmed from a rap song where he expressed discontent, stating, “They’re sacrificing us because of money… We are tired of their promises.” Additionally, a video depicted him holding a weapon, simulating the act of beheading.
“Finally, I’ve been released,” said the 27-year-old Idengo in a telephone conversation with media after departing from prison in Goma, located in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
President Tshisekedi had declared during an election rally in Beni, Katembo’s hometown, on December 11 that he intended to pardon the rapper.
“I will continue to express through my songs everything I have to say,” Idengo said.
The Democratic Republic of Congo, a nation rich in minerals yet facing significant economic challenges, is currently in the midst of conducting presidential and parliamentary elections. President Tshisekedi, aged 60, is seeking reelection for a second term.
