A Ugandan court has granted bail to 36 members of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party.
Their lawyer, Erias Lukwago, confirmed the ruling on Thursday.
The FDC members had been in police custody since July after their deportation from Kenya.
They were arrested in Kisumu while attending a training course for the opposition.
The International Crimes Division of the High Court set the bail at 5 million Ugandan shillings.
Each suspect will need to post approximately $1,400 to secure their release.
Lukwago expressed relief, citing poor prison conditions that affected the detainees’ health.
He noted that some members were suffering from medical conditions due to these conditions.
As part of their bail conditions, the FDC members must surrender their passports to the court.
This ensures they will not flee while their cases are pending.
Under President Yoweri Museveni’s regime, opposition parties in Uganda face strict control.
Recently, a military tribunal convicted 16 members of the National Unity Platform party of treachery.
