Danab brigade destroys al-Shabaab hideouts near Awdhegle

Over 100 al-Shabaab terrorists were killed in a major operation carried out by the Somali military, a security official said. The operation was conducted by the elite Danab unit in the Lower Shabelle region and involved extensive airstrikes against the group. The decisive action began on Sunday night and continued until the early hours of Monday morning, the security official added.

The state-run Somali National News Agency also reported the operation, saying it destroyed several hideouts and tunnels used by terrorists. Since July, the army has intensified its operations against the al-Qaeda-affiliated group in the country’s Lower Shabelle region.

Information Minister Daud Aweis stated that multifront operations by national forces have yielded decisive progress against the al-Shabaab terrorists. He added that over 150 terrorists were killed and several towns were liberated during these ongoing military operations.

The government of Somalia remains fully committed to eradicating terrorism from the region, the information minister stated in his briefing. Al-Shabaab, which has waged a sixteen-year insurgency, regularly targets security forces, government officials, and innocent civilians.
