Deadly clashes erupt as Nigerians protest economic hardship

At least three protesters were killed in Nigeria’s Kaduna state on Thursday.

Demonstrations took place nationwide against rising living costs and governance issues, reported by Reuters and eyewitnesses.

Kaduna police spokesperson Mansur Hassan stated that officers used tear gas, not live rounds, against protesters.

Tear gas was also used in Abuja to disperse crowds, according to eyewitnesses.

Demonstrations occurred in Abuja, Lagos, and other cities.

Protesters showed discontent with economic reforms causing inflation and hardship. President Tinubu vowed necessary changes for the country.

Authorities deployed armed security to prevent violence.

In Lagos, police monitored protesters marching towards government buildings, causing some shopping malls to close amid heavy police presence.

Nigerians, inspired by Kenyan protests in June, mobilized online for the reinstatement of fuel subsidies, free education, and security measures.

In Maiduguri, youths protested under heavy security presence.
