Deadly clashes in Somalia despite deal with Ethiopia

Just days after signing a deal aimed at resolving months of tension, Somalia and Ethiopia were plunged back into conflict on Monday when Ethiopian forces attacked Somali troops in the border town of Doolow.

The Somali foreign ministry condemned the attack, stating that Ethiopian forces targeted three Somali military bases, resulting in casualties.

However, Jubaland state officials claim the incident began when Somali federal forces attempted to shoot down an aircraft carrying Jubaland state officials.

This sparked a firefight that escalated, with Ethiopian forces intervening to support Jubaland forces.

The incident threatens to derail the recent agreement brokered by Turkey between Somalia and Ethiopia.

This agreement aimed to resolve a dispute stemming from Ethiopia’s agreement with Somaliland, which Somalia viewed as a violation of its sovereignty.

The clash underscores the complexities and fragility of the security situation in the Horn of Africa region.
