Fourteen people lost their lives in a devastating road crash when a passenger bus collided with a petrol tanker in central Nigeria.
The fatal accident occurred on Saturday near Kusobogi village, approximately 80 kilometers from Minna, the capital of Niger state.
According to Kumar Tsukwan, head of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Niger state, the crash happened as the bus driver attempted to overtake another vehicle.
“The bus rammed into an oncoming petrol tanker in a head-on collision, leaving fourteen dead and six others injured,” Tsukwan said.
Emergency responders rushed the injured victims to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment, though their conditions remain unknown.
Tsukwan blamed excessive speeding and reckless overtaking for the tragedy, emphasizing the dangers of violating road safety regulations.
The ill-fated bus was traveling from Lagos, Nigeria’s bustling economic hub, to the northern city of Kaduna when the accident occurred.
Deadly road crashes are frequent in Nigeria, where poorly maintained highways and reckless driving contribute to thousands of deaths annually.
Just last week, a similar tragedy in Kano claimed 23 lives when a truck overloaded with passengers and goods overturned.
According to FRSC data, Nigeria recorded 9,570 road crashes last year, resulting in 5,421 fatalities across the country.
Authorities continue urging drivers to adhere to speed limits and traffic laws, hoping to prevent more lives from being lost on the nation’s roads.
