Eight miners died on Wednesday in a tragic incident at an open-pit copper mine.
Police confirmed the fatalities after mounds of earth collapsed on the miners in Chingola, Copperbelt Province.
One miner remains missing, while two others survived the deadly collapse.
Provincial police commissioner Peacewell Mweemba reported that six of the deceased miners belonged to the same family.
The victims were not employed by the mining company. They were part of a group searching for copper without permission at the mine.
This incident is part of a troubling trend involving informal miners in Zambia.
Earlier this month, ten informal miners lost their lives in a collapse in Mumbwa, central Zambia.
In August, nine men died at a quarry near Lusaka due to a similar incident.
Last December, heavy rain caused landslides at another mine in Chingola, killing over 30 informal miners.
Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema described the number of mining accidents as “unacceptable.”
The government continues to address safety issues in the mining sector.
