Denmark embassies shifts focus to North Africa, Rwanda

Denmark will shut its embassies in Burkina Faso and Mali while launching new missions in Senegal, Tunisia, and Rwanda, as per a fresh Africa strategy announced by the Foreign Ministry on Monday.

Due to military coups limiting diplomatic scope in Burkina Faso and Mali, Denmark’s embassies in these nations will close. Relations have soured since coups in Mali (2020) and Burkina Faso (2022), the ministry stated.

Tunisia and Senegal hold key strategic importance for Denmark, with potential for expanded ties in green transition and democratic governance in regions marked by instability and military coups.

Denmark will also upgrade its embassies in South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, and Nigeria into regional hubs, boosting cooperation with nearby countries and improving coverage of regional developments.

Recognizing Africa’s growing global influence, Denmark aims to deepen ties, counter Russian and Chinese interests, and increase trade. Foreign Minister Rasmussen emphasized Africa’s pivotal role in shaping future geopolitical alignments.
