Displacement soars in DR Congo, M23 clashes

Kanyabayonga, a strategic town in the war-torn east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), witnessed a surge in fighting on Friday between government forces and M23 rebels.

This escalation comes as the rebel group, active since 2021, continues its push northward in North Kivu province.

The clashes erupted in Kanyabayonga, a vital pathway to major commercial centers Butembo and Beni.

The town, with a population exceeding 60,000, is also just 100 kilometers from the provincial capital Goma, which remains under threat from the M23 rebels, reportedly backed by Rwanda.

Local health sources reported at least two civilian deaths and five injuries from the bombings during the clashes.

This violence further disrupts the lives of civilians in the region, with the UN reporting displacement and the suspension of humanitarian aid due to security concerns.

The M23’s advance on Kanyabayonga marks their entry into the fourth territory of North Kivu, adding Lubero to Rutshuru, Nyiragongo, and Masisi.

While government forces managed to push back the rebels from Kanyabayonga’s suburbs, the UN warns of a “crystallized” frontline around the city.

The UN report also highlights continued fighting near Sake, west of Goma, further displacing civilians who have already endured years of conflict.

The situation in Kanyabayonga remains tense, with the potential for further clashes and displacement as the M23 rebels continue their northward push.
