DR Congo security forces accused of summary executions

Human Rights Watch (HRW) is urging the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) government to investigate alleged extrajudicial killings following a thwarted coup attempt on May 19th.

The coup attempt involved armed men attacking the home of the economy minister and the Palais de la Nation, the presidential office.

Military spokesman General Sylvain Ekenge reported that security forces killed four coup participants, including leader Christian Malanga, a Congolese-American.

However, HRW disputes the official narrative.

They claim to have a video showing Congolese soldiers apparently shooting at unarmed individuals believed to be involved in the coup attempt.

The video depicts the aftermath of the incident near President Tshisekedi’s office, showcasing seven men in civilian clothes, some even without clothing, including a presumed foreign participant.

“The government’s response needs to be respectful of human rights,” stated Lewis Mudge, HRW’s Central Africa Director.

This includes a fair and impartial investigation into the possibility that security forces engaged in summary executions.

The video reportedly shows soldiers shooting at one of the men, who then appears lifeless.

Another man jumps into the Congo River, seemingly in an attempt to escape.

This incident highlights concerns about the use of force by Congolese security services.

A thorough investigation is needed to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths and ensure accountability for any wrongdoing.
