DR Congo’s Amani festival ∫ecomes casualty of ongoing conflict

The annual Amani Festival, a significant cultural event promoting peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has been canceled due to ongoing security concerns in the eastern region.

The festival, scheduled to take place in Goma from November 14th to 17th, has been a beacon of hope and unity in a region plagued by conflict.

The decision to cancel the festival comes amidst heightened tensions between the Congolese army and the M23 rebel group.

The M23 has made significant territorial gains in recent months, and the city of Goma, where the festival was to be held, is situated near the conflict zone.

Organizers expressed deep disappointment, acknowledging the festival’s role in boosting the local economy and fostering social cohesion. Renowned artists such as French-Guinean rapper Black M and Congolese rumba star Ferre Gola were set to perform at the event.

The cancellation of the Amani Festival underscores the fragile security situation in eastern DR Congo and the challenges faced by the region’s population.
