DRC: Fighting intensifies as M23 rebels near Goma

Civilians are fleeing their homes in eastern Congo as M23 rebels backed by Rwanda close in on the strategic town of Kanyabayonga.

This comes amidst renewed fighting between the rebel group and the Congolese army (FARDC) in North Kivu province.

The M23, which restarted its insurgency in late 2021, has captured significant territory, nearly encircling Goma, the provincial capital.

Hundreds of thousands of displaced people have already sought refuge in Goma.

The rebels are now just five kilometers from Kanyabayonga, a crucial town on the road leading to Goma.

Local officials report the town is emptying out as residents flee north to escape the violence.

This fresh offensive comes on the heels of a recent counter-attack by the FARDC, supported by pro-government militia, aimed at regaining territory in Rutshuru and Masisi territories.

However, the M23 captured the town of Kyaghala earlier this week, pushing displaced people further towards Kanyabayonga.

Fighting is also ongoing near Sake, a strategically important town just 20 kilometers west of Goma.

The escalating conflict raises concerns about the safety of civilians caught in the crossfire and the potential disruption of crucial aid deliveries to the region.
