Egypt intelligence chief meets Khalifa Haftar in Benghazi

Egypt’s intelligence chief met eastern Libyan commander Khalifa Haftar in Benghazi on Sunday to discuss regional developments and coordination.

Maj. Gen. Hassan Rashad held talks with Haftar in the presence of Libya’s Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Khaled Haftar.

According to state-run Al-Qahera News, Rashad conveyed greetings from President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and praised growing ties between Cairo and eastern Libya.

He stressed the importance of strengthening bilateral relations and deepening cooperation on shared security and political interests.

Both sides reviewed local and regional developments and underscored the need for sustained communication and coordination.

The meeting came a day after Egypt’s Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Ahmed Khalifa, visited Benghazi for high-level military talks.

Khalifa met Haftar during the closing session of a Mediterranean and Sub-Saharan chiefs of staff conference held from Feb. 10 to 12.

Libya remains divided between rival administrations competing for legitimacy and control of key institutions.

The internationally recognised Government of National Unity, led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, governs western Libya from Tripoli.

In the east, a parallel government appointed by the House of Representatives in 2022 is headed by Osama Hammad and operates from Benghazi.

The United Nations has for years sought to bridge the divide and guide Libya toward long-delayed parliamentary and presidential elections.

Diplomatic efforts aim to reunify the oil-rich nation, where fragile calm still rests on unresolved political fault lines.
