Egypt, Kuwait support ICJ ruling on Palestinian self-determination

Egypt and Kuwait have joined a growing chorus of voices supporting the International Court of Justice (ICJ) advisory opinion on the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.

The ICJ, in a landmark ruling, deemed the decades-long occupation illegal and called for its swift end.

The UN General Assembly requested the ICJ’s opinion in 2022.

The court’s verdict affirmed the Palestinian right to self-determination and condemned Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem as unlawful.

The ICJ urged Israel to cease all settlement activity and evacuate existing settlements.

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry applauded the ICJ decision, highlighting its recognition of the occupation’s illegality and its violation of Palestinian self-determination rights.

They demanded a prompt end to the occupation, a halt to settlement construction, and the evacuation of all settlers.

Furthermore, Egypt called upon the international community to respect and enforce the ICJ’s opinion, support Palestinian self-determination, and alleviate the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry echoed similar sentiments, underlining the need for international action.

They urged the international community to fulfill its legal, political, and moral obligations to help establish an independent Palestinian state and end aggression against Gaza.

The ICJ’s advisory opinion, though not legally binding, carries significant weight.

The decision is expected to further isolate Israel diplomatically and embolden calls for an end to the occupation.
