In a shocking development, Gabon’s defense ministry announced on Thursday the detention of eight officers implicated in the torture death of a soldier, Johan Bounda.
The young soldier had been accused of stealing, an allegation that led to his tragic demise.
The case has sent shockwaves through the country, which is currently under the control of a junta led by General Brice Oligui Nguema.
An emergency meeting convened by the junta’s leader has also led to two generals being questioned regarding the incident.
Disturbing images of Bounda’s mutilated body, displayed in a morgue, have sparked widespread outrage throughout Gabon.
His death has ignited national protests, with many calling for accountability from the authorities.
In response, the government has promised a thorough investigation. General Oligui, who personally visited the victim’s family on Christmas Day, assured the public of swift action.
Prosecutors claim Bounda was accused of attempting to rob a superior’s home before being tortured at the military security service headquarters, known as B2.
This incident comes on the heels of the junta lifting a curfew that had been in place since it took power in August 2023.
Meanwhile, police have arrested numerous protesters in Libreville, with some alleging harsh punishments, including head shaving, for defying curfew orders.
