Eight killed as fishing boat capsizes in Mozambique

A tragic incident unfolded in central Mozambique as a fishing boat sank in the Zambezi River, claiming the lives of eight individuals, including six children.

The disaster, which occurred in the Sofala province on Monday, follows closely on the heels of another maritime tragedy just a week prior, where nearly 100 individuals, many of them children, perished in a shipwreck located around 1,000 kilometers further north.

According to Nobre dos Santos, administrator of the Caia district, the ill-fated boat was carrying a total of 12 passengers, primarily farmers. While two individuals managed to survive, two others remain missing, and six of the deceased were children.

Search efforts are underway to locate the missing persons.

The earlier incident on April 7 involved an overloaded makeshift ferry boat, which capsized, claiming the lives of 98 individuals. The ferry was transporting numerous families in a state of panic, seeking refuge from a suspected cholera outbreak.

Mozambique, one of the world’s poorest nations, has reported almost 15,000 cases of cholera and 32 deaths since October, as per government statistics.
