Emergency response underway after landslide in Ethiopia

Ten people were killed in a landslide in Ethiopia’s Amhara region, local state media reported. The Amhara Media Corporation (AMC) confirmed the disaster, citing local administrator Tesfaye Workneh, who noted that four bodies had been recovered.

The landslide occurred in the North Gondar zone on Saturday, but AMC did not specify the exact time of the incident or if a search is ongoing. Eight others were seriously injured and are currently receiving treatment, according to the local official.

Approximately 2,400 people have been displaced by the disaster and are now sheltered in local social institutions, AMC reported. Photos shared by the media outlet show people carrying a body from the site of the landslide.

The landslide is the latest in a series of similar incidents across Ethiopia due to heavy seasonal rains. The United Nations OCHA, citing the Ethiopian Metrology Institute, warned of more potential floods and landslides in the country.

In July, a devastating landslide in southern Ethiopia’s Kencho Shacha Gozdi killed 229 people and displaced thousands. In the following weeks, further landslides claimed lives in Sidama and Wolaita, highlighting the ongoing threat in the region.
