Ethiopia faces new disaster: Landslide kills 11 people

A landslide in southern Ethiopia claimed at least 11 lives on Monday, near a site where a similar disaster occurred last month, according to local authorities.

The tragedy highlights ongoing regional risks.

Rescue teams have found eleven bodies in Kawo Koisha district, part of the Wolaita administrative zone, and search operations continue.

The Wolaita Zone Government Communication Affairs Department shared this update on Facebook, urging vigilance.

Officials warned that the death toll might increase.

This area, northeast of Kencho Shacha Gozdi, was hit by mudslides on July 21-22, resulting in over 250 deaths and affecting thousands, showcasing the region’s vulnerability.

Heavy seasonal rains have caused a series of landslides in southern Ethiopia recently.

About a week after the Kencho Shacha tragedy, six people died in the Gishere district in neighboring Sidama state, highlighting the ongoing danger.

State-affiliated media outlet Fana Broadcasting Corporate reported that South Ethiopia regional authorities warned residents about the flood and landslide risks.

Ethiopia’s vulnerability to climate-related disasters remains a significant concern.
