Ethiopia faces Somalia’s accusations of arms smuggling

Somalia expressed concerns on Sunday regarding illicit arms shipments into its territory, allegedly carried out by neighboring Ethiopia.

During a press conference in Mogadishu, Somali Foreign Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi described the alleged shipments as a threat to Somalia’s security.

He called on Ethiopia to honor existing agreements, while commending Turkey’s mediation efforts between the two countries.

A previous statement from Somalia’s Foreign Ministry claimed Ethiopia had made unauthorized arms deliveries to Puntland, a semiautonomous region in northeastern Somalia.

The ministry reported that two trucks carrying weapons from Ethiopia to Puntland had been documented, with no diplomatic engagement or approval.

The Somali government described this action as a serious violation of its sovereignty and warned of significant risks to national and regional security.

Tensions between the countries remain high, particularly over Ethiopia’s agreement with Somaliland, a breakaway region, regarding access to the sea.

Despite these tensions, Turkey has been actively mediating to reduce hostilities between Somalia and Ethiopia. The United Nations has praised Turkey’s efforts, including recent talks held in July and August aimed at finding a resolution.
