Authorities in northeastern Ethiopia have begun evacuating residents from areas near a potentially erupting volcano, according to state-affiliated sources and geological experts.
The Ethiopian Geological Institute shared footage on its Facebook page showing smoke and dust rising from the Awash Fentale volcano in the Afar region, approximately 165 kilometers (102 miles) from Addis Ababa.
Fana Broadcasting reported that local officials in Afar had initiated evacuations as a precautionary measure. The area has experienced increased seismic activity in recent months, heightening concerns.
Shiferaw Teklemariam, Commissioner of the Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission, emphasized the need for caution. “While it’s too early to confirm an eruption, we are not taking any risks. Some residents have already left the area, and we are preparing for a more organized relocation if necessary,” he told Reuters.
The region, known for its volcanic and seismic instability, remains under close observation as authorities work to safeguard local communities.
