Ethiopian authorities have arrested 82 individuals suspected of belonging to the Daesh (ISIS) terror group, officials announced on Tuesday.
The National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) said the suspects were allegedly trained in Somalia’s Puntland region before entering Ethiopia. Arrests took place in multiple regions, including Addis Ababa, Oromia, Amhara, Somali, and Harari, with major operations in Adama, Jimma, Shashemene, and Jigjiga.
Authorities claim the suspects were deployed across the country to carry out various extremist activities, including intelligence gathering, logistics, and financing. Communities reportedly played a key role in assisting security forces during the arrests, which were part of a coordinated counterterrorism effort.
The NISS said investigations are ongoing and more arrests may follow as the security operation expands across sensitive regions. This wave of arrests underscores Ethiopia’s growing concern over the infiltration of foreign-trained militants into its borders.
Officials have warned that terror networks, though weakened, remain a persistent threat to national stability and public safety. Authorities assured the public that security forces remain on high alert to prevent any future terrorist operations in the country.
