Ethiopian PM visits village devastated by deadly landslide

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed visited a remote village hit by a deadly landslide that killed over 250 people.

Heavy rain on Sunday triggered the landslide in Kencho Shacha Gozdi, 480 km from Addis Ababa.

Officials are still determining the exact death toll.

The UN’s humanitarian agency OCHA reported at least 257 deaths, warning the number could rise to 500, with many still missing.

Accompanied by his wife and other leaders, Abiy planted a tree at the local cemetery.

The south Ethiopia regional state office shared this on social media, highlighting the visit.

Ethiopia is highly vulnerable to climate-related disasters.

Most victims were buried while trying to help after the initial landslide, which was followed by more landslides.

Ethiopia’s parliament declared three days of mourning.

Seasonal rains between April and early May caused flooding and displacement, affecting over 21 million people who rely on humanitarian aid.
