The African Development Bank (AfDB) announced on Thursday that it officially filed a complaint with Ethiopian authorities following the arrest, assault, and detention of two of its staff members by the country’s security forces.
Labeling it as a “very serious diplomatic incident,” the AfDB described how, on October 31, two of its staff members were “unlawfully arrested, physically assaulted, and detained for many hours by elements of the security forces without any official explanation.”
According to an AfDB statement, the Ethiopian government has pledged its backing to the bank and assured a swift investigation into the incident.
The statement also affirmed that the bank’s operations in the East African nation remain unaffected by the occurrence.
