
Davies Chama, a former Zambian defense minister, was sentenced to eight years in prison with hard labor on Friday for shooting a political worker.
Chama’s conviction stemmed from a politically charged incident in which he shot a political worker during general elections that took place ten years ago.
The 60-year-old Chama appeared at the Mongu High Court in the capital of Western Province for his sentencing.
In the case, he and co-accused Brian Nyoni were specifically charged with shooting Mushaukwa Mushaukwa during a 2015 parliamentary by-election campaign.
Nyoni, who is now a fugitive from justice, received the exact same eight-year sentence and will begin serving his time immediately upon his arrest.
Judge John Mbuzi announced the verdict, which stemmed from a 2015 incident during the Mulobezi parliamentary by-election in Western Province.
