A failed jailbreak at DR Congo’s Makala prison in Kinshasa left at least 129 dead, with women raped, the interior minister reported Tuesday. The prison, holding 10 times its capacity, remains shrouded in uncertainty over how the incident unfolded.
Gunfire was heard around 2:00 am on Monday, lasting several hours near the prison in a residential neighborhood. Witnesses described an unusual calm later, with police and soldiers patrolling the area, according to AFP journalists.
Interior Minister Jacquemain Shabani announced a provisional death toll of 129, with 24 shot after warnings. Many were crushed or suffocated, with 59 injured and receiving care. Gunshots resumed early Tuesday morning.
Authorities have yet to disclose how many inmates attempted to escape. Government spokesman Patrick Muyaya assured the public the situation was “under control,” with inquiries launched to identify those responsible for the sabotage.
Makala prison, built for 1,500 but holding up to 15,000 inmates, suffered significant damage during the escape attempt. Human rights groups regularly condemn the deplorable conditions, warning of potential revolts after the recent violence.
