Fans rally to celebrate Cameroon’s president’s 42 years in power

On Wednesday, supporters of Cameroonian President Paul Biya celebrated 42 years in power with vibrant rallies and calls for his eighth term.

This celebration follows Biya’s recent return after a six-week absence that raised questions about his health. The 91-year-old leader’s supporters urged loyalty and unity among party members during uncertain times.

Jean Nkuete, secretary general of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (RDPC), called for support in a letter, praising Biya’s “fantastic record” and urging an end to “malicious speculation” about his health.

In the west, activists rallied to invite all Cameroonians to back Biya’s candidacy in the upcoming elections. In Ebolowa, Higher Education Minister Jacques Fame Ndongo emphasized Biya as “a great statesman with a prodigious destiny.”

Despite the enthusiasm, Biya has remained silent about his future plans, leaving discussions of his health and leadership uncertain. Human rights activists express concern over his increasingly autocratic rule, as dissent is met with repression.

Supporters, however, maintain that Biya is committed to governance, as evidenced by recent military appointments and diplomatic meetings. As the nation reflects on his lengthy tenure, many continue to rally behind him, hoping for more years of leadership amid uncertainty.
