A shopping plaza under construction in Nigeria’s southeastern Anambra state collapsed late on Monday, leading to the tragic death of at least six individuals, with concerns mounting for others who may be trapped in the debris, according to the emergency agency.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) revealed that the building, housing over 120 shops, crumbled in the city of Onitsha. NEMA further reported that some of the rescued individuals were transported to various hospitals in Onitsha for necessary treatment.
As rescue efforts continue, a search operation is in progress to locate any additional survivors, NEMA stated.
The frequency of building collapses in Africa’s largest economy and leading oil producer remains a concern, attributed to lenient regulations and the use of substandard construction materials.
