The tragic aftermath of the gas explosion in Nairobi’s Embakasi district on Thursday continues to unfold as authorities confirm that the death toll has now reached six.
The unfortunate incident occurred when a lorry, laden with gas cylinders, exploded just before midnight in a densely populated area of the city, sparking multiple fires and leaving destruction in its wake.
On Sunday, two more individuals succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital, the country’s largest referral hospital. Presently, 52 others are undergoing treatment at various health facilities for injuries sustained during the explosion.
Authorities have revealed that the filling facility responsible for the explosion was illegal and had been previously demolished twice. Kenyan police are actively pursuing seven suspects connected to the incident, including Derrick Kimathi, the alleged proprietor of the gas plant.
President William Ruto, on Saturday, placed blame on incompetent and corrupt government officials for permitting the operation of the plant in a residential area. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion is ongoing.
