Senegal’s Constitutional Council confirmed Bassirou Diomaye Faye as president-elect on Friday, following the release of final official results from the March 24 vote.
The anti-establishment candidate secured a decisive first-round victory with 54.28 percent of the votes.
The governing coalition’s candidate, former prime minister Amadou Ba, trailed behind with 35.79 percent.
Notably, the Council reported no objections raised by other contenders.
At 44 years old, Faye is set to become Senegal’s youngest president and is scheduled to be sworn in on Tuesday in the city of Diamniadio, according to the presidency.
The transition of power from outgoing leader Macky Sall will then take place at the presidential palace in the capital Dakar.
Faye’s victory marks the first time an opposition candidate in Senegal has won the election in the first round since the country gained independence in 1960.
