Firefighters battle fierce wildfires advancing through Libya’s oasis

Devastating wildfires continue to consume southwestern Libya, spreading aggressively into the residential heart of Alawenat Oasis. Local authorities are battling the inferno, which began on Saturday in agricultural zones.

The flames’ relentless advance threatens homes and livelihoods across the region.

Hamed Mohammed Ahmed, an Alawenat Oasis Municipal Council member, confirmed relentless firefighting efforts since dawn. He described the situation as dire, with fires accelerating rapidly.

Ahmed lamented the complete lack of government assistance in extinguishing the expanding blaze.

The conflagration originated in agricultural areas, quickly overtaking dry vegetation.

Libya’s state news agency LANA reported the swift escalation into residential neighborhoods. While the damage is extensive, no injuries have been reported so far.

Libya frequently experiences recurring fires, especially during summer due to high temperatures. Southern and western regions are particularly susceptible to these climatic events.

A recent significant fire also erupted in March within the palm forests of Rebiana city.
