A coalition of five nations, including the US, UK, and Turkey, reaffirmed their support for Somalia’s sovereignty on Thursday.
The group, also consisting of Qatar and the UAE, urged dialogue to ease tensions in the Horn of Africa.
The nations met in Washington, DC, for their seventh session as the Somalia Quint.
They discussed Turkish-led mediation efforts aimed at resolving regional conflicts.
Representatives from Somalia’s government participated in the talks.
Turkey hosted mediation between Somalia and Ethiopia in July and August following rising tensions.
In January, Ethiopia signed a controversial pact with Somaliland, Somalia’s breakaway region, allowing an Ethiopian military base and a 50-year lease of the Red Sea port of Berbera.
The group emphasized shared economic and security goals, particularly in combating terrorism.
They also expressed support for Somalia’s efforts to build capable and accountable security forces.
The Quint stressed the need for coordination in training Somalia’s forces and agreed on steps to enhance international cooperation.
They also highlighted the importance of finalizing plans for the new African Union Stabilization and Support Mission.
China, addressing the UN Security Council, called for continued dialogue and unity to resolve differences in Somalia.
