Flash floods triggered by violent thunderstorms killed seven people on Sunday in Safi, a coastal city in western Morocco, authorities said.
Officials said torrential rain fell within roughly an hour, turning streets into rushing torrents that swept through neighbourhoods with sudden force.
Morocco’s state news agency, citing local officials, reported that homes and businesses were inundated as floodwaters surged after intense thunderstorm activity.
The deluge left scenes of destruction across parts of the city, as muddy water poured through buildings and carried debris downstream.
Authorities said 20 others were injured in the floods and are receiving treatment at the government-run Mohammed V Hospital in Safi.
