The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) expressed solidarity with Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Chad, which have faced severe floods since Aug. 16.
The OIC’s message highlighted the need for immediate support for these affected nations.
OIC Secretary-General Hissen Brahim Taha urged member states, OIC institutions, and international partners to extend emergency assistance.
He acknowledged the efforts of the affected governments in responding to the crisis caused by widespread flooding.
The floods have killed hundreds and displaced thousands across West and Central Africa in August.
CARE International reported that in Niger alone, climate change-driven floods killed 217, injured 200, displaced 353,000, and severely damaged infrastructure.
Additionally, CARE stated that 16,900 livestock perished, 3,000 hectares of crops were destroyed, and 21.5 tons of food were lost.
In Nigeria’s Jigawa State, floods killed 33 and displaced 44,000 people, destroying 7,800 houses and 10,337 hectares of farmland.
Mali declared a national disaster on Friday due to heavy rains that triggered floods affecting 17 regions and Bamako.
Since the rainy season began, 30 people have died, with over 47,000 people impacted by the flooding, house collapses, and lightning.
